Weekly Clinic News -21st April 2017

Weekly news from the Clinic 21st April, 2017

Welcome our Weekly Clinic News for 21st April, 2017.

After a well-deserved rest over Easter we have had a productive week in the Clinic. We have seen, as usual, many patients in the weeks after their shoulder surgery and have been giving patients advice for their recovery.

One feature of recovery we have become increasingly aware of is that the speed of rehabilitation after shoulder surgery is best tailored by each patient’s individual response to the procedure and what their actual shoulder problem was in detail.

In patients where no shoulder structure was repaired we can rehabilitate them as soon as comfort allows. However, interestingly the exact opposite is true if we have repaired structures especially tendons and especially if the tendon tears were large.

If you have had a rotator cuff tear repaired, you would expect discomfort in the weeks and months following your operation. However, some patients are quite comfortable and this is a sign that there is not much in the way of an inflammation response to surgery. However, we ideally want a reasonable degree of inflammation in the repair process as this is required for healing so if you are very comfortable then we need to slow your rehabilitation down to allow the tissue greater capacity to heal – a bit counter-intuitive but important.

The above is an example as to why we feel having therapists in house is useful as we can work very closely to ensure the most appropriate rehabilitation scheme for you and I am so indebted to our Senior Physiotherapist Jane Waddy for her excellent care of our patients at Hands & All therapy.
